OneSpace Submits Second Round of Comments on the Draft Gated Access Code of Conduct:

Continuing Our Longstanding Commitment to Gated Communities

The Information Regulator has published a draft Gated Access Code of Conduct under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) for public comment. This marks an important step in refining how personal information is handled at gated entry points across South Africa, and OneSpace is once again playing an active role.

Many readers may wonder what this process involves. In South Africa, codes of conduct issued under POPIA follow a structured pathway. The Information Regulator develops proposed codes, publishes them for public input, reviews all submissions, and, where appropriate, issues a final version. Once the final code is notified in the Government Gazette, it will typically come into force 28 days later, giving affected parties time to prepare.

OneSpace has been engaged in this process from the very beginning. Last year we participated in the initial discussions and provided detailed feedback to the Information Regulator. Today we are submitting our second round of comments, continuing to serve as the consistent voice for gated communities. We have always stayed one step ahead, anticipating regulatory developments and advocating for practical, balanced rules that support both safety and privacy.

Our position remains clear and constructive. We believe gated estates, office parks, and similar premises must retain the ability to collect sufficient personal information, including through biometric verification and identification checks, to maintain high standards of safety and operational security for residents, visitors, and staff. At the same time, we fully support reasonable oversight and transparent processes that protect individual privacy rights. Our comments focus on ensuring that any final code enables effective security measures while remaining practical and proportionate for the thousands of properties that rely on reliable access control every day.

We want to reassure all our clients, partners, and the broader community that OneSpace is fully compliant with POPIA and every other applicable legal requirement at this moment. Our solutions have been designed with both robust security and strong data protection principles at their core. Every system we deploy meets current regulatory expectations, and we continue to monitor developments closely to stay ahead of any changes.

We remain committed to delivering innovative access control technology that prioritises both the safety of the communities we serve and the responsible handling of personal information. If you manage a gated estate, office park, or security installation, or if you simply have questions about how these developments may affect your operations, please feel free to contact us. We are always happy to discuss the practical implications and support you in maintaining the highest standards of both security and compliance.
